Behold the potato masher! The ideal loose part for sensory play fun…and more. What kind of More? Well, I’ve seen them used as microphones, laser-blasters, gavels, branding irons, a device for pushing bouncy balls at goals in a child-invented pool-like game, and doll ski polls.
But sensory play is where they shine, because–this may not come as a surprise–they can mash more than potatoes. Kids can use them to mash, smoosh, bash, crush, and crunch play dough, pine cones, mud, water, leaves, and anything else you can mix up and dump into a sensory play bin. If your play space doesn’t have at least one potato masher, your play space is lacking. Luckily, they are affordable and readily available–new and used.
