Gunplay discussion was interesting. Family child care in central WI here. I had a group a few years back where I tried to open this conversation up with parents. I had kids whose families hunt and they were role-playing and shooting other children as deer. My limit was consent. You can’t shoot anyone without permission and toddlers can’t really say yes so stop shooting them, please! Yes, that was really about me not liking it, but also I don’t know how toddlers view being shot at. Maybe it goes over their heads, maybe not. Anyway, it was right when open carry laws had changed in WI and so the issue was highly charged. We were seeing no gun signs in places like the library, so it seemed like a good idea to bring it up in a parent letter and let everyone know where I stood. I invited the hunting parents to come to talk to the group if they wanted, talked about the consent, and stated that of course no actual guns should be carried into my home, just in case. I had one parent who was very strongly against gunplay and it was because her nephew had been killed playing with a loaded gun. I had another hunting parent somehow take what I said as being against guns, which wasn’t what I said at all. Nobody volunteered to share with the group. The boy whose mom didn’t want gunplay only attended 1 day a week, so I ended up talking with the children and telling them there isn’t going to be any gunplay when this child attends. Find a different game. It wasn’t ideal, but I didn’t really know where to go from there.

    1. It can be a heated topic for a lot of adults and finding the right balance for all involved is challenging.
