Many of us remember play-filled afternoons running around with the neighborhood kids, and wide open summer vacations filled with sunshine and fresh air. Adults weren’t around, but we knew how to find them and where to get help—even before cell phones. Today, this kind of free, unstructured, unsupervised play is virtually nonexistent. Many children today spend nearly every waking hour consuming some type of schoolstuff, mostly orchestrated and observed by adults. Street hockey and flag football and a good game of neighborhood catch have disappeared, replaced by organized activities for toddlers to teens.
