About Unregulated Child Care
The term Unregulated Child Care refers to child care that is not actively regulated by the state, province, or community in which it takes place. Types of unregulated child care include kith and kin child care, license-exempt child care, and babysitting. Unregulated child care usually takes place in the child’s home or the home of the caregiver.
Some voice concern about the quality of unregulated care since there is no mandate to meet the same heath, safety, and programming standards as licensed child care programs in the same jurisdiction. Others prefer this type of care because it takes place away from the prying eye of government–they see the lack of oversight as a feature, not a bug.
It should also be noted that some professional caregivers opt to run small-capacity unregulated child care programs because they want to avoid the add layer of bureaucracy that comes with oversight.
