Not content with requiring that all students learn the same things, some people want them to learn the same things at the same time. Some even want this to happen across the whole country. Such standardization probably wouldn’t enhance learning, but it is the whole idea of imposed standards, not just the prospect of nationalizing them, that should give us pause. Let’s face it: many of the people doing the imposing, even at the state or local level, know precious little about teaching and learning.
