…what strikes me again and again when I step into preschool classrooms is not any lack of goodwill, but the absence of recognition of young children as unique people with their own ideas, their own feelings, their own thoughts and tastes and experiences. I’ve seen this disconnection at all levels of teacher preparation and practice and even sometimes at the level of the licensors and accreditors who are charged with maintaining safety and determining what constitutes good or bad pedagogy. Many of these childcare and preschool programs are accredited by some of the most reputable organizations in the country, yet their curriculum sometimes betrays a dismaying lack of sympathy for, or even understanding of, what it is like to be a child.
