In a study of more than 150 schools in three states, kindergarten and first grade teachers were found to “assign more homework in schools that had a high proportion of low-income students, students of color, and students performing below grade level.” The homework in these classrooms was much more likely to be scripted and didactic, whereas more privileged children were more likely to get lessons that focused on problem solving and understanding.
