As children become more mobile and communicative, their interest in the objects around them develops from ‘what it is’ to ‘what it can become’. Their exploration is still open-ended, as they explore systems of representation (Ashton et al., 2009: 10) and symbolic representation. Their learning is built on their previous explorations of objects, emphasising how important the continuity of the learning journey is (DfES, 2007: 3.2).
