The sterility of the computer environment is particularly worrisome for young children, prior to the age of seven years or so, who are in the process of developing their senses. At the computer monitor, children learn about the world through symbols—pictures and words—on a screen. The pictures may be attractive, but children get no sense of how things feel, smell, taste, weigh, or respond to their movements. A picture of a pond is no substitute for the sensory stimulation of a real pond—the breezes and mists off the water, the feel of the mud and ground at the water’s edge. The picture of a bird, or even a video of one, is no substitute for being near a real bird, watching its movements, noting how it reacts to sounds, sights, and wind currents, as well as to one’s own presence and movements.
