A child-centered parent acts something like an experienced gardener. An experienced gardener knows that he doesn’t actually grow plants. He tries to create good conditions for growth, such as fertile soil and the right amount of water and sunlight, but beyond this there is a limit to what he can do. The plant grows on its own, under the guidance of inner forces. In a similar way, we as parents can create conditions and opportunities for the child’s growth, but we must trust the child to do her own growing.
