About Professional Development

Professional development (AKA PD and Continuing Education) refers to career-related learning and education occurring after a person begins working in a profession. In early learning, most regulator organizations require the completion of a certain number of professional development hours each year. This additional training can take many forms, from informal self-study to formal university- level courses in pursuit of an advanced degree.

Early learning organizations approach PD in different ways. Some employers work closely with staff to ensure this training is thoughtfully selected to meet the employee’s and the program’s needs. These programs work with staff to create personalized professional development plans and ensure resources are available to cover related expenses. At the other end of the spectrum, the main goal is to file away documentation showing minimum requirements have been met.

Thoughtful professional development can potentially:

  • Expand knowledge
  • Improve confidence
  • Enhance skills
  • Increase opportunities
  • Build professional relationships and networks
  • Grow career opportunities

For programs, PD can improve overall program quality, keep staff up to date with new ideas and technology, and grow future leaders.

In the end, professional development is what individuals and the programs they work for choose to make of it.
