I asked a teenager today if he thinks he could pass a test that he took a few weeks ago in one of his science classes. He said, “I could probably do ok on it but wouldn’t remember everything.”
This. This is why, when a person can choose to learn what they are interested in and spend time wondering about it, they will learn it DEEP. They will learn it until they don’t want to learn it anymore and then they will be inspired to move on to the next thing.
This is why, in the history of the whole world, the hunter/gatherers learned through play and experiences and had no formal schooling. Formal education has taken up only about 1% or less of the whole entire existence of people. If we believe in the many nuances of human evolution, why don’t we (society at large) believe in play anymore?
The research is there. The evidence is there. We need more voices there. NOW. It is urgent.
