Lace offers a versatile and visually stimulating loose part for children’s play.
Back in my family child care days, we had a variety of doilies, coasters, table runners, and tablecloths available for play. They were used in dramatic play when it was time to set the table for the Queen’s birthday party and as webs when Spiderman needed to entangle a villainous evildoer.
They were also tossed, rolled, snuggled, stroked, and stretched. It turns out many kids enjoy the tactile experience of this frilly fabric against their skin.
They were also used to strain excess water from sloppy mud.
As you can see, the stuff offers a wide range of play options–that’s what makes loose parts so vital to early learning settings.
