State law sets a school starting age. For most, that’s six or seven. In two states, it’s even age eight. When a child starts, she can begin in either first grade or kindergarten. Children do not have to graduate from kindergarten in order to attend first grade. Even if you live in one of the few states with “mandatory” kindergarten, that means your family has to file paperwork, but you don’t have to school your five-year-old child. You can bypass kindergarten.
