Free play has many faces. It could be a child whacking two sticks together. It could be tree climbing, painting, making silly faces, digging in the sandbox or saying “Let’s pretend.” Whatever it is, the action is spontaneous, child initiated and child directed. The child follows her own ideas or the ideas of another playmate. When focused on play of their own interest, children are working at their optimum level of learning.
