Having an understanding of other people as people who have desires, beliefs and their own interpretations of the world is often referred to as having a ‘Theory of Mind’ (Smith et al. 2010). The term ‘theory’ reminds us that we cannot see or touch the mind and can only infer (or theorize) about the mental state of another from what they say or how they behave. Because it involves emotions, desires, deceptions, beliefs and differing perspectives, it is also virtually impossible to define with any precision, which is why psychologists disagree about when a child is capable of this mental state.
