Here’s a free downloadable PDF highlighting the 5 principles of counting formulated by researchers Rochel Gelman and Randy Gallistel. These principles are things children tend to work out for themselves while playing with objects and talking with knowledgeable others about numbers. You can support children’s understanding of these concepts by providing ample time for play, a variety of play materials for them to manipulate, and plenty of conversation.
