We give children a confusing message when asking them if they want to do something that we are going to do anyway. …Be clear about what you are going to do. If there is not an option, state the plan clearly and simply: “We are going to read a story now.” Meaning what we say depends on knowing what we mean to begin with. I find that when I am clear with myself first, I will be more effective in meaning what I say.
