A toddler who is involved in dramatic play may offer you a mud pie or a “cup of tea.” This can be fun, and without thinking, you might launch into a monologue about how the tea is delicious and, in so doing, change the course of the play. Instead, do as little as possible and follow your child’s lead. Try not to make assumptions about her script or idea. It can be delightful to take part in this way—letting your child be the author and director, with you acting as a mere supporting player. But when an adult gets carried away in the play, he or she can quickly and unintentionally hijack it.
