We’re scared, but the news about low crime is not getting out. The more I looked into it, the more I realized a secret fact: We live in a very safe era—much safer than when I was a kid. All the bad stuff—rape, murder, crimes against children—is down, and not only down, but down significantly. In fact, violent crimes in 2014 were close to half the level they were in 1994, according to the FBI. This dramatic decline is also occurring in other Western countries.
