Many schools have become outright hostile to play, and a false dichotomy has defined childhood play and work as two separate things. According to educational psychologist and professor Gene Glass of the National Education Policy Center at Arizona State University, “the puritanical attitude toward play is widespread to the detriment not only of schooling but to all of life.” He told us, “Virtually everything is wrong with this way of thinking. And it is a crime that it permeates all levels of the education system.” Play, said Glass, “can lead to cognitive development of many kinds, but the prejudice against play is shot through the education system and it is just getting worse.”
