Zip ties, AKA cable ties, support connecting, creativity, problem-solving, STEM play, and more. They also help kids hone hand-eye coordination, small muscle control, and visual tracking.
They are available in a variety of colors and sizes and are relatively inexpensive. Think of these things as connecting tools kids can use in their tinkering, dramatic play, and creative endeavors.
A bit of timely direct instruction when first introducing them to kids is warranted to help keep things safe. The biggest hazard these items present is the possibility of cutting off circulation or breathing. Kids should know not to tighten the ties on fingers, toes, or other body parts–or to put longer zip ties around necks. We humans tend to be injury-adverse, so just knowing about the potential danger helps mitigate it.
