Plopping yoga mats into your play space as loose parts adds a bit of color and a lot of fun as kids sort out interesting ways to use them. Full sized, kids may use them as magical flying carpets, blankets, or beds. They may line them up to make roads, sidewalks, or rooms. They may drape them over chairs and table to make forts. They may roll them lengthwise and use them as balance beams. They may fold them to make pillows. They may drape them over their shoulders or wrap them around their waists to make clothing.
Yoga mats don’t have to remain full sized. With a sharp pair of scissors, kids can slice and dice them into a myriad of shapes, large and small. Strips for weaving, waving, or wearing. Hunks for hauling, drawing on, and tossing. Bits for taping, gluing, and floating.
You can buy them new, of course, but the budget friendly option is to seek out old ones and give them a new life as loose parts. There are plenty of people out there who have abandoned their yoga aspirations and plenty of others who stick with it and like to upgrade their gear from time to time. Collect them and send them out to play.
