Which stereotyped behaviours attract the lion’s share of our attention? Do we focus equally on the quiet, passive, domestically orientated play that occupies so much time for so many young girls? Do we feel concern about the impact on their physical development of an excess of sedentary activity? Are we concerned that their compliance to the routines and rules of the classroom may signal a more worrying compliance to a passive female role in the future? Many practitioners agree that they do little to shift young girls’ horizons beyond settled and sedentary activities because these do not cause them any management difficulties. Most of our negative attention in relation to gender-stereotyped behaviour is directed at the lively, noisy and physical play associated with some boys of which war, weapon and superhero play is a prime example.
