Many practitioners do not value war, weapon and superhero play as a form of imaginative play. Many feel that its themes are simply dictated by films, videos and TV series, which have limited and repetitive content based crudely on a struggle between good and evil and thus offer children little in terms of extended imaginative play. Moreover, children are re-enacting scenarios where force, often violent, wins out, which contradicts practitioners’ efforts to resolve conflict peacefully. fully. A major difficulty with this analysis is that because children are generally interrupted in such play scenarios I do not feel we can begin to evaluate the imaginative potential of such scenarios unless we allow them to develop.
