Language, however sophisticated, is just a conventional symbolic code (Bruner 1966) which allows us to share our thoughts, feelings and experiences in an approximate way with other human beings. Words spoken, or on a page, describing a landscape we have never visited, can only come alive in our heads if we can use our imaginations to make connections and project ourselves into possible worlds (Bruner 1986).
