There are many elements involved in effectively using language to intervene in behavioral situations. Here are some basic guidelines: • Match your tone of voice and facial expression to the situation. • If you mean no, say “No!” or “Stop!” • Avoid vague and wishy-washy requests when you need an immediate response. • Tell the child what she can do instead of the unacceptable behavior. • When the inappropriate behavior has stopped, soften your facial expression and support the child in moving to successful alternatives.
