According to a 2017 Gallup report, parents of children ages ten and younger acknowledge that free play “fosters creativity and problem-solving,” but they do not think these qualities are especially important. In fact, the study found child-led unstructured play ranked near the bottom of the priority list for parents, while academic skills were highly ranked. The report concludes that many parents don’t appreciate the importance of unstructured childhood play on children’s development and tend to be anxious about their children’s free time.
