In his 1969 book, The Open Classroom, Kohl describes three environments for learning: authoritarian, open, and permissive.Authoritarian environments are the most common and the strictest, demanding acquiescence to authority figures. Permissive environments are overly indulgent and unruly. Open environments can promote the deepest learning because they don’t control children, but they also don’t let children control the adults.
