Throughout the 1970s, [John] Holt advocated for learning separate from schooling, encouraging parents to remove their children from school to homeschool them. In his 1981 book about homeschooling, Teach Your Own, Holt writes, “What is most important and valuable about the home as a base for children’s growth in the world is not that it is a better school than the schools but that it isn’t a school at all.”Holt coined the term “unschooling” to encourage further distance from a schooled way of thinking, even at home.
