Conventional schooling today is much more standardized and test-driven than it used to be. In 2001, the US Congress passed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) as part of a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, first enacted in 1965. It broadened the role of the federal government in public schooling and focused on frequent standardized testing to increase school and teacher accountability.
