We tend to accept normal human variation for some developmental milestones but not for others. For instance, we generally do not feel the need to hurry up our children’s first rolls or first crawls or first steps. Yet, as children age, we often increasingly feel the need to intervene in their learning: to start teaching them instead of allowing them to learn, in their own way, in their own time, when surrounded by caring adults and plentiful resources.
