…it really doesn’t matter how “motivated” your child is to do something (use the potty, practice the piano, go to school, whatever). Rather, the question you’d want to ask is how your child is motivated. To put it another way, it’s not the amount of motivation that counts— it’s the type. And the type that’s created by rewards usually has the effect of reducing the type we want kids to have: a genuine interest that persists long after the rewards are gone.
