Young children are able to make autonomous moral decisions. When they are asked to think about a hypothetical environment in which there are no rules or authority figures, they claim that certain actions would still be wrong. For example, if preschoolers are invited to think about a school with no rules and no punishments, they insist that hitting or stealing in such a school would still be very bad. By contrast, they acknowledge that deviations from convention—sitting in the wrong place, dressing in an odd fashion—would be rendered acceptable (Turiel, 2006).
