A question implies that children recognize their ignorance, conceive of possible answers, and realize that other people, if asked, can help them choose among those possible answers. For example, when young children ask, “What’s this called?” they can conceive of the object having a name—even if they do not know what it is—and they expect that their interlocutor can tell them what that name is.
