Empathy is intertwined with attachment. It emerges first in intimate face-to-face interactions between babies and the people they love. There is a special moral intensity to the love between parents and children. Just deciding to care for this one particular, special, individual child automatically makes that child the focus of our deepest moral concern. Parents routinely sacrifice their sleep, their time, their happiness, even their lives for their children. And attachment research shows that babies develop a deep connection to a few particular, special, beloved caregivers.
