Unlike feedback, which is purely informational, praise is a judgment. And positive judgments are ultimately no more constructive than negative ones. The primary effect of offering them is to make children dependent on getting more such expressions of approval. Like other extrinsic inducements, moreover, praise tends to undermine intrinsic motivation and, often, the quality of people’s work or learning.
