This handout looks at the interoceptive system, which monitors internal bodily sensations. Receptors in organs, muscles, and tissues send signals to the brain about hunger, thirst, temperature, and heart rate, helping regulate basic needs, maintain balance, and process emotional and physical states. This is the last in a series of Play Simplified handouts examining the 8 sensory systems. These handouts provide simple definitions of common early learning concepts and ways to support them.
