Children like to reflect on themselves and are quite capable of what is known as metacognition, or thinking about thinking, so classroom documentation (in the form of photos, captions, transcriptions of children’s questions, and sketches the children themselves have drawn) is a useful way for adults to help children develop insights about themselves, what they are doing, and, crucially, what they are capable of doing next.
