The problem with young children and technology is actually rather simple: we put the cart before the horse. We’ve allowed the technology in classrooms to drive children’s experience rather than insisting on the reverse. We’re constantly looking for new ways to retrofit pedagogy or child-rearing practices to technology’s latest specifications, couching the challenge in airy language about adapting to a changing world, when we ought first to be asking, “What are our goals for early childhood?” and only then considering whether, and to what extent, technology can serve them.
