Every teaching generation has its “reading accelerator” or “film-strip viewer” that’s going to revolutionize learning once and for all. When I was a kid, overhead transparencies and ditto machines were de rigueur, to be supplanted by a steady flow of headphones, videotapes, personal calculators, CD-ROMs, interactive whiteboards, universal laptops, audience response clickers, and iPads. If there is a better example of the triumph of hope over experience than instructional technology, I haven’t found it.
