Paring down the material environment is a time-honed strategy for engaging children, and educators sometimes talk wistfully about what would happen if they could start the school year with blank walls and nothing but wooden blocks, gradually introducing additional materials only when (and if) needed. Few teachers pull off this fantasy because it takes a certain chutzpah to greet eager families on the first day of school with a sunny smile and a classroom space that looks like a Greyhound bus depot.
