It’s easy to overlook the fact that, unlike talking, reading and writing—though essential learning processes—are by no means inborn ones, like learning to walk, that unfold more or less naturally regardless of environment. This reality is made apparent in the wide range of ages at which formal instruction begins. A four-year-old in the United Kingdom may already be receiving remedial work with phonics and writing, whereas in Finland, children aren’t required to read at all (although a large number do) before age seven. American preschoolers fall somewhere in between these extremes.
