To what extent do we believe children (and families) should be able to decide how to spend their time together? For that matter, what do we think childhood ought to be about? To require students to do homework on a regular basis is to give one kind of answer to these questions. If we don’t like those answers, then homework should come in for sharp scrutiny. After all, it is not a fact of life that must be accepted but a policy that can be questioned.
