Although the evidence doesn’t support the idea that homework leads to more effective learning or even to higher test scores, that often doesn’t seem to matter. No independent evidence of success is required because homework has symbolic value. The fact that kids are made to work harder is in itself taken to be a sign of “higher standards,” which may help to explain why many parents find it reassuring (and its absence disquieting).
