…the policies enacted in the name of higher standards have transformed classrooms, particularly those in urban school systems attended by minority students, into glorified test-preparation centers distinguished by heavily scripted lessons and endless practice tests. Second-rate schools have basically been turned into third-rate schools; whatever was left of decent teaching has been squeezed out. Many of the best teachers have left such schools after being forced to become test-prep technicians—which is yet another reason that talk about “raising standards” has actually lowered the quality of the schools.
