While I was writing this chapter, someone sent me a newspaper story about parents who are hiring academic tutors for two-year-olds—another example of how yesterday’s satire becomes today’s reality. The one constant theme in every report of such excesses is that no matter how extreme the practice, no matter what the costs to children’s emotional, social, ethical, or intellectual development, the article is sure to feature at least one person saying, somewhat defensively, “Well, it’s a competitive world.” The question begins to dawn: Is there anything we could do to children that people would be embarrassed to try to rationalize with that phrase?
