While the research on intrinsic motivation shows that attempting to exert control over kids undermines their sense of autonomy, this does not mean that we should not make demands of our children. Just the opposite. Children of all ages need limits and guidance from parents and teachers. Without limits, chaos ensues, and a chaotic classroom or household does not foster learning.
