I’ve come to think of electronic media in the same way that I think about candy or junk food. Consuming it can be pleasurable, but too much isn’t good for you. It can also be habit-forming. Most of it contains nothing essential to children’s health and well-being. It’s not recommended for babies. When children’s diets are dominated by junk food, they are deprived of food that we know contributes positively to their growth and development. While junk foods may vary in their relative lack of benefit to children and are enjoyable treats, children get essential nutrients from other foods. It’s easier to postpone children’s access to candy than it is to limit it once they’ve started consuming it. And I think that’s true for media consumption as well.
