This handout outlines the ART of effective direct instruction so you’ll know when and how to use it. Direct Instruction is frequently used ineffectively in early learning settings; ask the tens of thousands of fidgeting children subjected to daily lectures on topics an adult thinks are essential. That said, when thoughtfully deployed, direct instruction is a valuable tool.

Direct instruction is not always academic. Use it effectively whenever a child voices interest in assistance from what Vygotsky would call a More Knowledgable Other.
